The New York Times Magazine comes with the Sunday Times. It is slightly bigger than tabloid size, which gives the articles room to breathe. Perhaps this is why this magazine always has creative layouts. Above, the photo is bright and attractive and is balanced by the text-heavy facing page. At the top there are three categorical boxes that give information in an efficient way. The recipe is separated by a rule, giving it its own space. This layout mixes playfulness with traditional well.
#2: features, director profile
The features section always has these great lead-in pages that are just the title and a picture or a fun design. This is a great example of this. The lead-in pages are simple, the designer played with fonts and backgrounds a little to give the words their own visual weight, which is balanced by the image on the facing page. The words are almost mimic the shape of the director's head and shoulders, which helps with the balance. I really like the layout of the pictures on the 3rd spread: simple and elegant. I also like the continuation of the font variations for the pull quotes. LOVE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE!
but how do you really feel about the nytimes magazine?
ReplyDeletei really like the second example-the creative typeface and image selections really give it a french avant-gard film feel to it. in general their usage of photography in the magazine always adds a lot of visual depth to whatever piece it is.
