SUBLIMINAL MESSAGING
chipotle's new ad campaign

Chipotle has a new ad campaign that is "meta." In their new ads they make fun of the ad agency, which pulls the audience in on the joke, makes Chipotle seem down-to-earth, and also gets across a simple message. As you can see, they use text to send two separate messages to the audience. One about their meat being superior because it doesn't have hormones, and then a simpler message about Chipotle tasting delicious. This is effectiv
e, because up close people can read the gray and black text, and from far away they just see the black text, which itself sends a message. And the black text also is a cheeky reference to subliminal messaging. I like this ad campaign. You can read more about this campaign here, if you want!

For September, Newsweek did something interesting. They used only text to highlight all of the rumors that surround President Obama's identity. By using different fonts, they were able to make this visually appealing. The contrast of the types of fonts--the sizes, the shapes, and the textures--give this a visual balance. And the repetition of the same font in the same red at the top and bottom ties the whole thing together and sends a different message: The Making of a President. The different fonts also convey different meanings and give the audience a feeling about each word--they are mostly symbolic of the words they are representing. For example, the "wall-street loving" font looks like the font that is used on a dollar bill, representing money.

  1. I love the Chipotle ad. The fact that the typeface is bold in strategic places makes the ad more interesting. The lighter text is there as the ground but the figure, "Chipotle tastes delicious" stands out even more despite the other words.

  2. Well aside from the fact that Chipotle is amazing, I always like the way they set up their advertising. I like that they don't have to use pictures of their food to entice people or get them to notice. You know what Chipotle is, and how good it tastes, so instead, they use the ad to bring attention to other things about the food people might appreciate in a witty way.

As for the magazine cover, It definitely got my attention.
